Porthmadog and the surrounding area from the air
Porthmadog
Porthmadog is a bustling harbour town located on the Glaslyn Estuary between Snowdonia and the Cambrian coast. The Glaslyn estuary is renowned as a haven for migrating birds and wildlife.
Porthmadog was once an important seaport for the export of slate, which was brought down from Blaenau Ffestiniog, across the man made embankment or "cob" on the narrow guage Ffestiniog railway.
At the other end of the town is the Welsh Highland railway, currently being rebuilt to run through the spectacular Glaslyn Gorge to Beddgelert and past Snowdon to Caernarfon.
